![]() ![]() The cloud seemed to be a living thing, creeping steadily forward, engulfing everything in its path. They were lambs to the slaughter.Īhead of him was a wall of fog that lay like a veil over the battlefield, and from within he heard the seemingly never ending wail of turrets and chain guns punctuating the cries of men as they fell. He squinted, trying to make sense of the chaos that swam around him, but there was none to be found. His ears rang, his vision spun, and the world around him seemed to be moving through a haze. Mustering what was left of his will, he pried his eyes open to gaze into the dead eye stare of the man who had been standing next to him just a moment before. Afraid of what he would see, and knowing that death would be the only thing to greet him. Something warm and red mingled with sweat and dirt as it ran into his eyes and he was afraid to open them. The explosion sent him violently airborne and he slammed to the ground, his limbs buckling as they hit and he collapsed into a whimpering mass. The shrieking of the missile barely given him enough time to react. "They're pushing on the left flank! Move, move, mov.!" Now, as the army marched upon them, he'd been dragged to the field of battle, a gun shoved in his hand and expected to hold the line. But his knife had little effect on metal plates. He was the shadow, the one who lingered in silence. All around he heard the cries of his comrades as they were cut down one by one my the merciless force that bore down on them unrelentingly. The world seemed to be burning to the ground as missiles screamed down from the heavens to envelop it in a ball of fire.
